Hello, Georgia HOSA! My name is Joyabhishek Charles and I am so excited to serve as your 2019-2020 State Secretary. You’ll be seeing that 11-letter first name a lot this year, so when we run into each other, feel free to call me “Joy”! If I didn’t get to meet you at SLC a few weeks ago, here’s a little bit about me:
I am a junior at Americus-Sumter High School. (If you don’t know where that is, you’re not alone: it’s an hour south of Perry, where our Fall Rally is held). At my school, I am involved with my school’s soccer team, where I play as a goalie. Aside from school, I am a cadet in the U.S.A.F. Civil Air Patrol, an organization for students to learn military and leadership skills. I am also involved with my school’s Japanese Student Exchange Program. In 2018, I spent a week in Japan learning about their culture and school system; that fall, my family served as a host family for Japanese students and I got the opportunity to serve as an ambassador and show our school to a group of exchange students.
Now, for the fun stuff: HOSA! As a kid, I loved to think I was a real doctor, which worked out great for me because, ten years later, I heard of a special CTSO in my sophomore year where I could keep doing that. When I attended my first SLC, I knew I wanted to do more with HOSA, so I became an officer at my chapter. At that year’s JumpStart, I became even more interested in how HOSA developed leadership. I saw how much the state officers (hey, Team 18) had dedicated to making their state HOSA even better. On the bus ride home, I knew that I had to try to be in their place next year, and so it began….
Now, as a state officer, I have the privilege to meet our 14,000+ members and play a bigger role in our conferences and events. I hope to see all of you in June at ILC in Orlando, FL, and I am so excited for an amazing year serving as your State Secretary!...
