Chapter Spotlight: Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy

On Saturday, November 23, BASA HOSA students met with fourth-year West Point Cadet Abigail Bugg at Night Sky Coffee Roasters, a local coffee shop in Winder, to grab a sweet treat and learn about what the military has to offer for future healthcare professionals. Cadet Bugg discussed her journey at West Point in the Life Sciences program and the process of preparing for and applying to medical school. She gave advice to students wanting to go to medical school or pursue research and introduced them to the HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) for those wanting to pursue a graduate degree in healthcare (MD, DMD, OD, nursing school, veterinary school, etc.). Students learned how this allows for an opportunity to complete their education debt free in exchange for working in military medicine for a certain number of years depending on the length of the program and residency. They also learned about the benefits of working in military medicine such as the financial stability and fulfillment from having a sense of purpose that comes with serving and giving back to our country.
