Your Guide to Becoming a Georgia HOSA State Officer

By: Brinley Thomas

Every great leader starts with a single decision: the decision to step up and make a difference. If you’re ready to challenge yourself, inspire others, and leave a legacy, Georgia HOSA is calling your name. Becoming a state officer isn’t just a title–it’s an opportunity to transform lives, including your own. This is your chance to lead with purpose, serve with passion, and grow into the leader you’ve always dreamed of being. Even if you have the slightest interest in becoming a state officer, take the steps and apply. You will embark on a journey that will shape your future forever. And to help you out, we’ve broken down the application process for you:

Phase I: Application, Evaluations, and Candidate Exam

Your journey begins with a comprehensive application that includes:

●      An essay and various short-answer questions to showcase your passion and personality

●      Teacher recommendations

●      Other forms for you, your parents, your advisor, and your principal to sign (Conduct Form, Travel Authorization, Medical Release, etc.)

The application process is rigorous and may seem daunting but don’t let that stop you from applying! When completing your application, be authentic. We want to know what makes you, YOU! Once your application is submitted, you will then take a candidate exam where you must score above 70% to move on to the next phase.

Phase II: Virtual Interview

If you pass Phase I you will move on to the Virtual Interview stage. Be prepared for a 10-15 minute interview on Google Meets. You may be interviewed by state officers, members of the Board of Directors, or other Georgia HOSA officials.

Phase III: On-Site Interview and Nominating Committee

The third phase is one of the most critical ones and takes place in person at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Downtown Atlanta.

Here’s what happens:

●      A formal interview with the nominating committee

●      A meet-and-greet with other candidates

●      A filmed, 30-second speech explaining why you’re the ideal candidate

Dress professionally, arrive prepared, and connect with fellow candidates! This phase is not just about competition–it’s about growing alongside like-minded leaders.

Phase IV: Campaigning

This phase is your platform to share your vision! Once you’re officially slated as a candidate, you will begin campaigning at SLC. Campaigning is your opportunity to showcase your ideas and rally support for your candidacy!

What’s included:

●      Social media outreach (positive, clean, and impactful content only)

●      Onsite campaigning at the State Leadership Conference, where you’ll present materials and meet members

●      Participate in a symposium, which includes speeches, debates, and Q&A sessions with candidates

Phase V: Election

The culmination of all your efforts! During Phase V, voting delegates will cast their votes, and the results will be announced at the Recognition Session. However, take note that your campaign/votes from the voting delegates is only 40% of your score. Your performance in Phase I is 30% and Phase II + Phase III combined is also 30%. If elected, you will soon begin an exciting journey of serving as a Georgia HOSA State Officer!

Being a state officer is about representing the members, advocating for them, and growing into a leader who inspires change. You’ll create lifelong memories, form invaluable connections, and leave a lasting impact on thousands of members across the state. This is your chance to lead the future–don’t let it pass by you!
